The event, curated by the visionary Excellency, Ms. Irena Mernik, brought together fine wine, gourmet cuisine, and the essence of Slovenia’s vibrant winemaking heritage. At the heart of the evening was Ferdinand Winery, a jewel of Slovenia’s Brda wine region. Rail travel in America is about to get a major upgrade. AmeriStarRail’s highly anticipated Transcontinental Chief is slated for a May 10, 2026 debut—perfectly timed with National Train Day and the kickoff of the FIFA World Cup. Promising to whisk passengers from New York City to Los Angeles in less than 72 hours, the project aims to usher in a new golden era for cross-country travel.

A Private Vision for a National Journey

According to Newsweek, Scott Spencer, AmeriStarRail’s Chief Operating Officer, envisions the service as a way to “create opportunities to usher in a profitable Golden Age of rail travel for passengers and truckers, with the ingenuity of free enterprise, as we celebrate our great nation’s 250th birthday next year.”

The privately funded Delaware startup intends to carry passengers, cars, and even tractor-trailers, using a mix of Amtrak’s coaches, sleeper cars, and dining cars. By combining freight and passenger travel, AmeriStarRail hopes to deliver efficiency, convenience, and profitability—all while revitalizing interest in long-haul train journeys.

The Route: 54 Cities, 8 Major Stops

The Transcontinental Chief will build upon existing Amtrak lines, notably the Southwest Chief and the Pennsylvanian, linking the East and West Coasts through a series of key hubs. While the train will pass through 54 cities in total, these eight major stops define the heart of the route:

  1. Hoboken, NJ – convenient access for NYC travelers
  2. Harrisburg, PA
  3. Pittsburgh, PA
  4. Cleveland, OH
  5. Chicago, IL
  6. Kansas City, MO
  7. Albuquerque, NM
  8. Los Angeles, CA – arriving at Union Station

Travelers from Manhattan will first take the PATH train to Hoboken due to clearance restrictions at Penn Station, which prevent the use of Amtrak’s double-decker Superliners in Manhattan.

How It Works

AmeriStarRail proposes leasing or assuming control of specific Amtrak routes while upgrading service levels, speed, and comfort. The plan would integrate sleeper accommodations for multi-day travel, full-service dining cars, and baggage handling for both passengers and vehicles.

“This is a way to confront the challenges Amtrak faces and create opportunities for them to succeed,” Spencer told USA TODAY. “We’re hopeful all parties, including host railroads, recognize what a great opportunity this is for our nation.”

A Race Against the Clock

Not everyone is convinced. Amtrak representatives have stated that the proposal is “lacking a fundamental business case to support its lofty goals”, but with under a year to go, AmeriStarRail remains confident.

In the meantime, East Coast travelers won’t have to wait for improved rail service. Beginning August 28, 2025, the nation’s fastest train will launch between NYC, Boston, and Washington, D.C., promising faster, smoother, and sleeker service for the busy Northeast Corridor.

The clearance restrictions mentioned in the article refer to physical size limits in New York City’s Penn Station.

Here’s what that means:

  • Amtrak’s double-decker “Superliner” railcars—which AmeriStarRail plans to use for the Transcontinental Chief—are too tall for the tunnels leading into Penn Station.
  • These tunnels were built over 100 years ago and have limited vertical clearance because they run under the Hudson River and through older underground approaches in Manhattan.
  • As a result, Superliners can’t physically fit into Penn Station. Only Amtrak’s single-level cars, like those used on the Northeast Corridor, can enter.

That’s why the AmeriStarRail plan has NYC passengers board in Hoboken, New Jersey, which is accessible via the PATH train from Manhattan. Hoboken Terminal can handle the Superliner height without tunnel restrictions, and from there the train can head west without switching to smaller cars.

Southampton, NY — Under the golden glow of a Hamptons summer evening, the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center of the Hamptons celebrated its Silver Anniversary in true style with the 25th Annual GET WILD! Gala—an unforgettable night dedicated to compassion, community, and the creatures that share our world.

For a quarter of a century, the Center has been the beating heart of wildlife rescue and rehabilitation across Eastern Long Island. This year’s gala was not only a celebration of 25 years of tireless dedication but also a record-breaking moment: over 1,800 animals aided in 2025 alone, marking the highest number in the organization’s history.

Guests arrived at the Southampton Arts Center to a warm welcome from Executive Director Kathleen Mulcahy and Gala Emcee, the award-winning animal advocate Jill Rappaport, whose boundless energy set the tone for the night.
