On September 18th, the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) orchestrated an evening of inspiration and impact at its 18th annual Heroes, Heart & Hope Gala, held at the elegant Casa Cipriani in New York City. The event was a resounding success, raising over $2.4 million to empower athletes with physical challenges and showcase the transformative power of adaptive sports.
Distinguished figures and celebrities graced the occasion, including renowned sportscaster Bob Costas, who conducted a heartfelt interview with CAF teen Rosalie Parker. Rosalie bravely shared her journey with the audience, leaving a lasting impression on all who were present. The gala was not merely a celebration, but an immersive experience that featured powerful storytelling from CAF athletes, emphasizing the importance of supporting adaptive sports and providing opportunities for individuals with physical challenges to thrive.
Event Chairs Scott and Emily Stackman, whose unwavering dedication to the cause spans 18 years, played a pivotal role in the evening’s triumph. Their tireless efforts in fundraising and organizing galas have fueled CAF’s growth and impact in the Northeast region, transforming not only the organization but also their own lives. The gala also served as an opportunity to honor Alan Mnuchin for his long-standing contributions to the foundation. A supporter and volunteer since 2006, Mnuchin and his family have actively participated in CAF events, raising crucial funds for adaptive sports equipment and programs.
Among the extraordinary guests were Scott and Tyler Sussman, a father-son duo who exemplify resilience and determination. Scott, an athlete and father, embraced adaptive sports later in life after being misdiagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. He and his son Tyler, both diagnosed with Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia, now participate in various sports, proving that limitations can be overcome. Another inspiring guest was 14-year-old Rosalie Parker from Boise, Idaho, who discovered her passion for adaptive sports through CAF. Despite losing all four limbs in a car accident in 2020, Rosalie’s spirit remains unbroken. During her interview with Bob Costas, she presented him with a painting symbolizing her journey, a poignant reminder of her resilience and determination.
Scott Stackman, Host, Chairman, and Gala founder, eloquently captured the essence of the evening and CAF’s mission, stating, “CAF is helping the next generation of athletes break down barriers and achieve what was once thought of as impossible. The funds raised at our Heroes, Heart, and Hope Gala will have a profound impact on the lives of athletes with physical disabilities, enabling them to achieve their full potential and thrive.”
The gala’s remarkable success will enable CAF to provide adaptive sports equipment and programs for millions of individuals, empowering them to lead active and fulfilling lives. It stands as a testament to the unwavering belief in the transformative power of sports and the boundless potential of individuals with physical challenges. The Challenged Athletes Foundation continues to be a beacon of hope, inspiring athletes to break barriers, defy expectations, and live life to the fullest.
