Amidst this yearning, a beacon of hope emerges in the form of a lu’au organized by the Ho’olokahi Polynesian Alliance at Colorado Mesa University. Scheduled for Saturday, April 1st, this event promises a taste of home and a much-needed respite from the academic grind. The highlight of the evening will be a performance by Kalani Pe’a, a Grammy Award-winning artist whose music resonates with the spirit of the islands.

The lu’au holds special significance for Breanne Meier, the University Center director and Ho’olokahi club advisor. As a freshman in 2001, she experienced a similar longing for her native Kauai. To bridge the gap between her new life in western Colorado and the vibrant culture she missed, she choreographed the dances for CMU’s first lu’au. The event was a resounding success, drawing a crowd of 900 people and fostering a sense of community among students who shared a connection to the Polynesian islands.

Over the years, the lu’au has become a cherished tradition at CMU, providing a space for students to celebrate their heritage and share their culture with others. This year’s event is particularly special, as it marks Kalani Pe’a’s first return to his alma mater since graduating in 2007.
