Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe: A World Premiere Celebration of Genius José Gurvich at Hutchinson Modern & Contemporary

New York, NY — On Wednesday, September 10th, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, Hutchinson Modern & Contemporary (HM&C) will open its doors to present José Gurvich: Sense of Place. More than an exhibition, this is a landmark event that places Gurvich, one of the most visionary and multifaceted artists of the 20th century, firmly in the spotlight he has long deserved.

The Genius of José Gurvich

Born in Lithuania in 1927, raised in Uruguay, and carried across Europe, Israel, and New York City, José Gurvich (1927–1974) embodied the spirit of a global citizen long before the phrase was fashionable. A member of the legendary Taller Torres-García, his early works were steeped in Constructive Universalism. But Gurvich’s restless imagination could not be confined—his artistry exploded into a dazzling range of mediums, genres, and subjects: still lifes, portraits, landscapes, abstraction, and deeply spiritual explorations of Jewish tradition.

Sense of Place is Gurvich at his most powerful: an artist who absorbed the world around him while carrying within himself an unshakable core of identity and imagination. His works are symphonies of place, memory, and soul—timeless testaments to a man who turned displacement into universality, and roots into wings.

The Exhibition: A Global Stage

For the very first time at HM&C, audiences will experience paintings, ceramic sculptures, and works on paper that chart Gurvich’s odyssey through four continents of inspiration:

  • Montevideo — The spark, where a young Gurvich absorbed Torres-García’s teachings and built the foundations of his creative universe.

  • Europe — The crucible of experimentation, where centuries of art history expanded his visual vocabulary.

  • Israel — The soul, where Jewish identity, faith, and ritual came alive on canvas and clay.

  • New York City — The crescendo, where the energy of the metropolis pushed him into bold abstractions and thrilling innovations until his untimely death in 1974.

Each geography transformed Gurvich—and yet, everywhere he went, he carried his own “sense of place” within him, infusing his art with symbols, beliefs, and roots that made his work instantly recognizable and profoundly personal.

Gurvich Among the Greats

The scale of Gurvich’s impact is evident in the company he keeps. His works are housed in the world’s leading museums, including:

  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

  • The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

  • The Denver Art Museum, Colorado

  • The Princeton University Art Museum, New Jersey

  • The Blanton Museum of Art, Austin

  • The Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA), Long Beach

  • The Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA)

  • The Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales, Montevideo

  • The Museo de Bellas Artes, Caracas

To see Gurvich’s works gathered at HM&C is to witness an artist whose rightful place is among the giants of modern art.

A Digital Dimension

To deepen this unprecedented celebration, HM&C will debut an online Study Room at Hutchinsonmodern.com. This digital companion opens Gurvich’s world to global audiences, with archival materials, essays, and an immersive exploration of his artistic process.

A Night of History

The opening reception on September 10th will be nothing less than a cultural happening—an evening where collectors, critics, curators, and art lovers gather to honor a visionary whose work transcends borders and generations.

Sense of Place is not just another show. It is the moment José Gurvich takes his place on the world stage as one of the greats of the 20th century.

Casa Cipriani: The Glamorous Stage

What better home for this cultural summit than Casa Cipriani, the Art Deco-revived masterpiece by architect Thierry Despont. A private club by day, and an icon of elegance by night, Casa Cipriani evokes the golden age of travel, with its riviera-style terraces and harbor views. Guests sipped champagne under crystal chandeliers while previewing canvases, sculptures, and visionary works that redefined 20th-century art.
