The music world mourns the passing of Mona Joy Lum, affectionately known as Mona Joy, one of Hawaiʻi’s most beloved and enduring musical icons. Mona Joy’s journey began in the vibrant music scene of Waikiki, where she rose to prominence as one of “The Songbirds of Waikiki.” Her talent shone brightly on the stages of legendary hotels like the Niumalu, The Queens Surf, Moana Surfrider, The Royal Hawaiian, and The Halekulani. Her voice, imbued with the spirit of aloha, carried the enchanting melodies of Hawaiian music to audiences worldwide.

Her influence extended far beyond the shores of her island home. As “The Lex Girl” at The Lexington Hotel’s Hawaiian Room in Manhattan, she captivated New York audiences and even earned the admiration of music legends like Elton John. Her recordings, now treasured collector’s items, stand as a testament to her timeless artistry.

Though widely recognized for her musical talent, Mona Joy’s legacy extends far deeper. A respected member of the Hale O Na Aliʻi, a royal society, she carried the torch of Hawaiian culture and tradition with grace and dignity. A Living Legacy: Mona Joy, Hawaii’s Songbird of Waikiki, Continues to Soar and is expected to attend the 2024 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, which honor excellence in the Hawaii music industry, together with her daughter Melanie Palacio. The Awards will take place on Sat. Aug. 4th at the Hawai’i Convention Center.  The Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts (HARA) presents the awards, which were founded in 1978 by radio personality Krash Kealoha. The name translates to “Stars of Distinction” in Hawaiian, with “hōkū” meaning “star”, “nā” making it plural, and “hanohano” meaning “glorious, worthy of praises”.
