With a career spanning decades, her angelic voice and captivating stage presence graced the most prestigious venues in the islands and beyond, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the pleasure of hearing her sing. Melanie Palacio, her gifted musician daughter shared the news with us, after we just attended the Hawaiian Recording Academy Awards ceremony together, a few months back in Honolulu.

Mona Joy’s journey began in the vibrant music scene of Waikiki, where she rose to prominence as one of “The Songbirds of Waikiki.” Her talent shone brightly on the stages of legendary hotels like the Niumalu, The Queens Surf, Moana Surfrider, The Royal Hawaiian, and The Halekulani. Her voice, imbued with the spirit of aloha, carried the enchanting melodies of Hawaiian music to audiences worldwide.

Her influence extended far beyond the shores of her island home. As “The Lex Girl” at The Lexington Hotel’s Hawaiian Room in Manhattan, she captivated New York audiences and even earned the admiration of music legends like Elton John. Her recordings, now treasured collector’s items, stand as a testament to her timeless artistry.

Though widely recognized for her musical talent, Mona Joy’s legacy extends far deeper. A respected member of the Hale O Na Aliʻi, a royal society, she carried the torch of Hawaiian culture and tradition with grace and dignity. Her dedication to her heritage was further exemplified by her participation in the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo, a dream come true for the seasoned performer.
In recognition of her unparalleled contributions to Hawaiian music, Mona Joy was honored with the prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022. This accolade cemented her status as a true legend of the islands, her name forever etched in the annals of Hawaiʻi’s musical history.
Even in her 90s, Mona Joy’s passion for music burned bright. She continued to embrace new opportunities, working on projects to share her music with a new generation through digital platforms. Her unwavering spirit and dedication to her craft served as an inspiration to all.
