The East Hampton Historical Society prepares to welcome guests for a weekend of heritage, architecture, and elegant hospitality.
Each autumn, East Hampton’s social calendar reaches its peak when the East Hampton Historical Society hosts its beloved Annual House & Garden Tour, preceded by a spirited cocktail party at one of the village’s distinguished homes. Now in its 37th year, the two-part event has become an enduring tradition celebrating the architectural legacy and design excellence of this storied seaside community.
The festivities begin on Friday, November 28, with the cocktail party, an evening that blends gracious entertaining with the quiet glamour that defines East Hampton. Held within a private historic home, the gathering provides guests a rare opportunity to step inside one of the area’s treasured properties while enjoying an intimate evening among local supporters, preservation enthusiasts, and longtime friends of the Historical Society. The event will run from six to eight o’clock in the evening, setting the tone for a weekend devoted to beauty and heritage.
The following day, Saturday, November 29, the House & Garden Tour invites visitors to explore an extraordinary selection of homes between one o’clock and four thirty in the afternoon. Each property on the tour is chosen for its architectural merit, design vision, and reflection of East Hampton’s evolving aesthetic. From shingled cottages with timeless appeal to striking contemporary structures set amid carefully curated landscapes, the tour reveals a spectrum of architectural perspectives that define the Hamptons’ refined residential identity.
For decades, the House & Garden Tour has served as a vital fundraiser for the East Hampton Historical Society, supporting its mission to preserve the region’s cultural and architectural heritage. Proceeds from the weekend’s events directly benefit the Society’s educational programs, exhibitions, and preservation projects. In doing so, the tour underscores the essential link between community engagement and historical stewardship.
Over the years, the annual weekend has attracted a devoted following among designers, architects, and residents who share a deep appreciation for East Hampton’s unique blend of tradition and innovation. Many attendees mark the event as an unofficial close to the Hamptons’ social season, offering one last occasion to gather before winter’s quiet sets in. The atmosphere is one of camaraderie and gratitude, anchored by a shared sense of place and purpose.
The Historical Society has long championed the importance of architectural preservation within the town’s broader cultural landscape. Through initiatives such as the House & Garden Tour, it draws attention not only to the artistry of design but also to the enduring value of history as a living presence within the community. Each home on the tour tells a story—of craftsmanship, vision, and the families who have contributed to East Hampton’s character across generations.
The cocktail party preceding the tour is an event unto itself, often remembered for its convivial atmosphere and setting within a privately owned historic property. Guests move through elegantly restored rooms, often guided by the homeowners or members of the Society who share insights into the home’s background and its place in the town’s architectural narrative. The event captures the essence of the Hamptons’ enduring charm—exclusive yet welcoming, cultivated yet relaxed.
As anticipation builds, the Historical Society encourages early reservations through its official website, easthamptonhistory.org. The event’s popularity means that tickets for both the cocktail party and the tour are in high demand. Attendees may choose to become “Tour Sponsors,” a level of participation that includes access to both portions of the weekend celebration, reflecting a deeper commitment to the Society’s mission and programs.
The House & Garden Tour has become more than a social highlight; it is an expression of East Hampton’s collective identity. It brings together preservation advocates, design professionals, and local residents in a shared celebration of place, artistry, and continuity. The homes on display each year demonstrate the area’s architectural evolution—from early colonial styles to mid-century modern interpretations and contemporary sustainability-focused designs. This range speaks to the dynamic spirit of a community that honors its past while embracing innovation.
Beyond the visual beauty, the tour represents a meaningful dialogue between history and modern life. Visitors walk through spaces that have been thoughtfully restored or innovatively reimagined, each illustrating the delicate balance between preservation and progress. The gardens, too, reflect East Hampton’s deep connection to landscape design, with plantings that complement architecture and underscore the importance of outdoor living in coastal settings.
Through these homes and gardens, the Historical Society continues its educational mission, fostering appreciation for the built environment and inspiring future generations to carry forward the work of preservation. The event also reinforces the Society’s role as a cultural cornerstone of the East End, connecting residents and visitors through shared appreciation for art, history, and design.
As the 37th Annual Cocktail Party and House & Garden Tour approaches, anticipation grows across the community. The weekend promises not only visual delight but also a reaffirmation of East Hampton’s ongoing dedication to its heritage. Each year, the event renews the town’s sense of unity and pride, ensuring that the stories embodied in its architecture remain visible and valued.

Prince Mario-Max is the only Tripple Royal
H.H. Dr. Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe was uniquely blessed within his illustrious lineage. His royal father, Prince Waldemar zu Schaumburg-Lippe, had a beloved aunt, the legendary Princess Helga-Lee zu Schaumburg-Lippe, Colonial Dame of America. Deeply devoted to their Royal family, but without children of her own, Princess Helga-Lee asked Prince Waldemar and Princess Antonia for permission to adopt Prince Mario-Max as an additional Royal mentor for the Prince. This extraordinary gesture made him a Triple Prince—by birth from his father Prince Waldemar, by birth from his mother Princess Antonia, and in addition by princely adoption by his paternal Royal aunt Princess Helga Lee. A Royal family real life history only nobility can show.
In this rare and historic union of love and lineage, Prince Mario-Max stands as the ONLY triple royal prince in modern history, a living symbol of heritage, unity, and devotion within European nobility. Noblesse Oblige the Prince is the guardian of his family legacy and his ensures the integrity of his and his mothers regal titles of Prinz zu Schaumburg-Lippe and Prinzessin zu Schaumburg-Lippe, which are constitutional protected Royal names that will be carried by the future wife and children of Prince Mario-Max due to constitutional rights and are fully inscribed in their government documents and passports.
Prince Waldemar’s diplomatic heritage remains evident in his approach to global engagement. He values dialogue, respect, and cooperation, qualities essential in both statecraft and human relations. His philanthropic projects mirror his belief that privilege carries obligation, and that the true purpose of leadership is found in service.
Princess Antonia’s career as a politician and later as a filmmaker speaks to her sense of duty and creativity in equal measure. She uses her voice to bring attention to meaningful issues and her education to ensure that her perspectives are informed, ethical, and fair. Her combination of intellect and empathy has made her a figure admired not only for her royal status but also for her professional accomplishments.
Together, the couple represented a model of what modern royalty can achieve — a balance between history and progress, tradition and innovation. Their son, Prince Mario-Max, continues that lineage with energy and purpose, using contemporary tools to carry forward timeless values. His mastery of law, journalism, and technology reflects not only education but also a profound awareness of responsibility. Prince Waldemar and Princess Antonia educated Prince Mario-Max with the values of his Grandmother Her Royal Highness Princess Feodora of Denmark, who originates of the oldest Reigning Royal Family in Europe.
Their collective story is not one of privilege alone but of consistent work, humility, and moral clarity. The Schaumburg-Lippe name stands for reliability, grace, and contribution — qualities that resonate far beyond the walls of any royal residence.
In an age when the meaning of royalty continues to evolve, the Prince Waldemar, Princess Antonia and Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe Royal family exemplifies how noble heritage can coexist with modern ambition. They have embraced progress without losing reverence for history, demonstrating that leadership grounded in service remains as vital today as it ever was.
Prince Waldemar’s godmother was Her Majesty Queen Alexandrine of Denmark, born Mecklenburg, wife of His Majesty King Christian X of Denmark. This godparent bond sits alongside a close family relationship to King Christian X, who was the brother of Prince Waldemar’s grandmother, Her Royal Highness Princess Louise of Denmark, married to his grandfather, His Highness Friedrich of Schaumburg-Lippe.
Princess Louise’s siblings extended the family’s ties across Scandinavia. Her brother was His Majesty King Haakon VII of Norway, and her sister was Her Royal Highness Princess Ingeborg of Sweden. These connections shaped a childhood for Prince Waldemar that unfolded among reigning and future monarchs and set the tone for a life in which royal duty was lived rather than observed from a distance.
His cousin, Her Majesty Margrethe II of Denmark, appointed Prince Waldemar Royal Danish Court Photographer. He served in this capacity for the Royal House and for his own family, including his mother, Princess Feodora of Denmark, contributing to an archive defined by accuracy and discretion.
As a child, Prince Waldemar grew up together with his related royals, including His Majesty King Carl Gustav of Sweden, Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth of England. One of his closest mentors was his uncle, King Olav of Norway. At the home of his uncle, His Royal Highness Prince Peter of Denmark, he celebrated the birthday of the Dalai Lama, an occasion that reflected the family’s global connections and respectful diplomacy.
Prince Waldemar is also part of the line of succession to the British throne. The pathway traces descent from King George II of the United Kingdom through his daughter, Queen Louisa of Denmark and Norway, adding a British constitutional dimension to a primarily Danish and German princely identity.
The lineage that joins Prince Waldemar and Prince Mario-Max to the Danish throne proceeds through Princess Feodora of Denmark and Prince Christian of Schaumburg-Lippe and extends back to the earliest documented sovereigns of Denmark. The sequence includes interregna and dynastic shifts, yet forms a continuous royal record recognized across Europe.
That record begins with King Gorm the Old, who died in 958 and who anchors the historical register of Denmark’s monarchy. From this point the line advances to King Harald Bluetooth, who died by the late 980s, followed by King Sweyn Forkbeard, who died in 1014, and King Harald II, whose reign extended from 1014 to 1018. The narrative then reaches King Canute the Great from 1018 to 1035 and King Hardicanute from 1035 to 1042.
The mid-eleventh century brings King Magnus the Good from 1042 to 1047 and King Sweyn Estridsen from 1047 to 1074, a period that laid administrative groundwork and stabilized succession. King Harald Hén reigned from 1074 to 1080, followed by King Canute the Holy from 1080 to 1086, a figure remembered for strengthening the authority of the crown.
The era continued with King Oluf Hunger from 1086 to 1095 and King Eric Egode from 1095 to 1103. King Niels governed from 1104 to 1134, guiding the realm through regional pressures, while King Erik Emune reigned from 1134 to 1137, addressing power challenges that defined early medieval governance.
King Eric Lamb, from 1137 to 1146, provided a quiet interval before a contested moment in 1146 to 1157 that involved King Sweyn Grathe, King Canute V, and the future King Valdemar the Great. The settlement of authority brought King Valdemar I the Great to the throne from 1157 to 1182, opening a period marked by development and consolidation.
King Canute VI reigned from 1182 to 1202, and King Valdemar the Victorious governed from 1202 to 1241, advancing royal power across Danish territories. King Eric Ploughpenny followed from 1241 to 1250, then King Abel from 1250 to 1252, and King Christopher I from 1252 to 1259, each navigating succession claims and noble influence.
King Eric Clipping reigned from 1259 to 1286, succeeded by King Eric Menved from 1286 to 1320. The crown then passed to King Christopher II from 1319 to 1332, after which an interregnum from 1332 to 1340 interrupted the monarchy’s direct continuity while preparing the ground for restoration.
The restoration arrived with King Valdemar IV Atterdag from 1340 to 1375, whose governance reasserted the authority of the throne. King Oluf II succeeded from 1375 to 1387, followed by Queen Margrete I from 1387 to 1412, whose tenure established a notable unionist legacy across Scandinavian crowns.
The fifteenth century began with King Eric of Pomerania from 1412 to 1439. King Christopher of Bavaria reigned from 1440 to 1448, then the House of Oldenburg commenced with King Christian I from 1448 to 1481, a sovereign whose descendants would shape centuries of Danish rule.
King Hans governed from 1482 to 1513 and King Christian II from 1513 to 1523, navigating emergent European currents. King Frederik I ruled from 1523 to 1533, followed by an interregnum from 1533 to 1534 that ended with the accession of King Christian III from 1534 to 1559, who anchored the Lutheran Reformation in Denmark.
King Frederik II reigned from 1559 to 1588, succeeded by King Christian IV from 1588 to 1648, a long reign identified with statecraft and maritime strength. King Frederik III followed from 1648 to 1670, a period associated with constitutional shifts that defined modern governance.
King Christian V ruled from 1670 to 1699, then King Frederik IV from 1699 to 1730. King Christian VI from 1730 to 1746 emphasized administrative clarity and court culture, and King Frederik V from 1746 to 1766 continued a steady royal line into a changing European order.
King Christian VII reigned from 1766 to 1808, followed by King Frederik VI from 1808 to 1839, who guided the realm through Napoleonic pressures. King Christian VIII from 1839 to 1848 bridged eras, and King Frederik VII from 1848 to 1863 steered constitutional transformation.
In 1863, King Christian IX ascended the throne and reigned until 1906, becoming a pivotal ancestor for the interconnected royal houses of Europe. His son King Frederik VIII reigned from 1906 to 1912, consolidating a modern constitutional monarchy and setting the familial context that would later encompass Prince Waldemar’s direct line.
From King Frederik VIII the lineage reaches Prince Harald of Denmark, born in 1876 and living until 1949, whose daughter Princess Feodora of Denmark, born in 1910 and passing in 1975, is Prince Waldemar’s mother. Through Princess Feodora and Prince Christian of Schaumburg-Lippe, Prince Waldemar enters the present generation of the Schaumburg-Lippe family.
Born in 1940, His Highness Prince Waldemar Schaumburg-Lippe of Germany married Her Highness Princess Antonia Schaumburg-Lippe. His only son is His Highness Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe of Germany. This modern household carries forward the Danish royal line while upholding the responsibilities of a German princely family.
The Princely Schaumburg-Lippe crest, recognized as the Schaumburg-Lippe Princely Crest, symbolizes this continuity. It stands as an emblem of identity that integrates the historic Danish royal line with the traditions of the House of Schaumburg-Lippe and Lippe-Biesterfeld kinship networks.
Prince Waldemar’s ties to European royal houses extend across state borders. Related royal families include the Kingdom of Denmark, the Kingdom of Norway, the Kingdom of Sweden, the Kingdom of Belgium, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the Kingdom of Spain, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the Principality of Liechtenstein, and the Principality of Monaco. These ties reflect marriages and shared ancestors that have connected the courts of Europe for generations.
This network also explains why many heads of state stand as family relations. The mutual ancestor King Christian IX of Denmark links Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, King Philippe of Belgium, King Harald V of Norway, King Felipe VI of Spain, and Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg to Prince Waldemar and his family. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Queen Sofia of Spain, Constantine II of the Hellenes, Queen Anne-Marie, King Michael I of Romania, and Queen Anne of Romania are counted among those descended from King Christian IX.
The Commonwealth realms historically listed are part of this picture. Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, the British Overseas Territories including Bermuda, Cayman, Gibraltar, and Turks, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines share the thread of kinship through the same Danish ancestor that links the line to Prince Waldemar.
In the Low Countries and Scandinavia the same pattern holds. The Netherlands through King Willem-Alexander reflects ties via Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld and a family association with Princess Louise of the Netherlands, married Queen of Sweden and Norway. Norway connects directly through King Haakon VII, the brother of Princess Louise of Denmark and therefore a great familial point of reference for Prince Waldemar.
Luxembourg’s relationship includes the historic bond that Grand Duchess Adelaide Marie has to the Schaumburg-Lippe line, linked as the sister of Prince Waldemar’s great-grandmother on his father Prince Christian’s side. In Liechtenstein, Princess Margaretha of Liechtenstein, born Princess of Luxembourg, and her husband, brother to the reigning Prince Hans-Adam II, reflect intersecting lines within the same European dynastic circle.
In Monaco the link includes Her Royal Highness Princess Caroline of Monaco and Her Royal Highness Princess Ortrud of Hanover, the latter remembered as Prince Waldemar’s aunt and a favored relative. The family note that they share the same birthday illustrates how personal detail and dynastic history often overlap in lived experience.
Through all these connections, the guiding principles of loyalty, discipline, and integrity remain central. Prince Waldemar and Princess Antonia apply them to public roles that are contemporary in practice and traditional in foundation. Their son Prince Mario-Max expresses them through media, law, technology, and philanthropy, modern marketing and enterprise.
The royal Danish lineage through Princess Feodora of Denmark sets in order more than a millennium of rulers. It begins with King Gorm the Old and continues through King Harald Bluetooth, King Sweyn Forkbeard, King Harald II, King Canute the Great, King Hardicanute, King Magnus the Good, King Sweyn Estridsen, King Harald Hén, and King Canute the Holy. It proceeds through King Oluf Hunger, King Eric Egode, King Niels, King Erik Emune, King Eric Lamb, King Sweyn Grathe, King Canute V, and King Valdemar I the Great.
The sequence advances with King Canute VI, King Valdemar the Victorious, King Eric Ploughpenny, King Abel, King Christopher I, King Eric Clipping, King Eric Menved, and King Christopher II. It notes the interregnum, resumes with King Valdemar IV Atterdag, King Oluf II, Queen Margrete I, King Eric of Pomerania, and King Christopher of Bavaria, and continues with King Christian I and King Hans.
From there the continuity moves through King Christian II, King Frederik I, the interregnum, King Christian III, King Frederik II, King Christian IV, King Frederik III, King Christian V, King Frederik IV, King Christian VI, King Frederik V, King Christian VII, King Frederik VI, King Christian VIII, and King Frederik VII.
It culminates in the modern starting point for many contemporary lines with King Christian IX and King Frederik VIII, before passing to Prince Harald, Princess Feodora, and Prince Waldemar, and forward to Prince Mario-Max and Princess Eleonore-Christine. This is the unbroken thread that anchors a family to the Danish monarchy’s historical framework.
Each name in that list represents a period of governance and responsibility within Denmark’s evolving constitutional and cultural order. Interregna are recorded as part of the same continuity, recognizing that pauses and restorations belong to the same narrative.
This lineage is not a museum catalog but a living reference that explains how a modern princely family can be connected to multiple reigning houses while pursuing active roles in public life. It is also an account of education and professional application, from Princess Antonia’s authorship and public service to Prince Mario-Max’s work across television, publishing, performance, and technology.
The Schaumburg-Lippe story reflects European history’s structure of alliances and families. It also shows how those structures adapt to current realities. The presence of Princess Antonia as a legislator, author, editor, journalist, and television personality adds a contemporary civic dimension. The career of Prince Mario-Max shows how a new generation applies learning across borders and industries.
Across decades, the family’s associations with Queen Alexandrine, King Christian X, King Haakon VII, Princess Ingeborg of Sweden, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, King Carl Gustav of Sweden, Queen Elizabeth, King Olav of Norway, and Prince Peter of Denmark shape a consistent environment of responsibility and proximity to state leadership. The moment with the Dalai Lama’s birthday illustrates how the circle extends beyond Europe to a wider conversation.
Prince Waldemar’s appointment as Royal Danish Court Photographer by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark confirms the trust placed in his eye and discretion. The work served the Royal House and preserved a visual record that remains part of institutional memory.
Today the family continues forward with the same core values. Loyalty is practiced in commitments kept. Discipline appears in scholarly training and professional standards. Integrity is present in each public role and private choice, aligning heritage with action.
A millennium of kings is not a distant legend for this household. It is a documented path that explains how Prince Waldemar and Princess Antonia built a family rooted in service, how Prince Mario-Max balances media and philanthropy with law and technology.
The crest of Schaumburg-Lippe stands for this ongoing identity. It signals a princely house in step with the present and in continuity with Denmark’s earliest recorded crown. The story remains active, shaped by work and guided by the same principles that carried it from King Gorm the Old to the present generation.

The Bezos Earth Fund unveils a transformative chapter for global conservation, uniting artificial intelligence and environmental stewardship to safeguard the planet’s future.
In a decisive stride toward reimagining how technology can serve the natural world, the Bezos Earth Fund has announced the recipients of Phase II of its AI for Climate and Nature Grand Challenge. Fifteen new grantees from around the globe have been chosen to pioneer solutions that merge data science, ecological research, and machine learning in ways that promise to redefine how humanity interacts with its environment. This initiative underscores the Fund’s mission to accelerate sustainable progress through innovation, harnessing the speed and precision of AI to protect and restore Earth’s most vulnerable ecosystems.
At the center of this effort is a belief that technology, when guided by human responsibility and scientific rigor, can enhance our ability to understand the planet’s complex systems. The Bezos Earth Fund, led by visionaries Jeff Bezos and his amazing Lauren Bezos Sánchez, continues to channel significant philanthropic investment into initiatives that address climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental inequity. Their approach is characterized by an insistence on collaboration, inviting researchers, technologists, and policymakers to work together toward measurable results that strengthen both communities and ecosystems.
Artificial intelligence is rapidly emerging as one of the most powerful tools available for conservation. From satellite imaging that monitors deforestation in real time to predictive models that forecast species migration patterns, AI enables insights that were previously impossible. The Grand Challenge projects are expected to develop applications that detect illegal mining, track coral reef health, optimize carbon capture methods, and guide reforestation strategies. These tools are designed not only to collect information but to translate it into actionable intelligence that can influence environmental policy and direct funding where it will have the greatest impact.
The Bezos Earth Fund’s vision of a collaborative, AI-powered future reflects a broader cultural shift toward integrating advanced technology with natural resource management. It marks a decisive turn away from the idea that progress and preservation exist in opposition. Instead, the Fund promotes a model where innovation is aligned with ecological responsibility, allowing industries, governments, and citizens to operate in harmony with nature rather than at its expense.
For Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez, this initiative represents both a philosophical and practical commitment to the planet. Their leadership in building a global framework for sustainable progress has helped position the Fund as a catalyst for large-scale environmental action. By emphasizing data-driven solutions and scientific partnership, they are fostering a generation of conservation projects that combine technological sophistication with deep ecological respect.
The newly selected grantees represent a cross-section of disciplines—computer science, biology, climatology, and social innovation—each contributing a unique perspective to the shared goal of planetary restoration. Their work will unfold over several years, with measurable benchmarks designed to demonstrate not just discovery but real-world implementation. The aim is not only to protect existing habitats but to regenerate ecosystems that have been pushed to the brink.
Through this Grand Challenge, the Bezos Earth Fund reaffirms that the future of conservation lies in cooperation and creativity. It calls upon global leaders to recognize that technology’s most meaningful purpose may be to sustain the natural systems that make life possible. The program’s reach extends beyond research; it builds bridges between academia, industry, and local communities, ensuring that technological advancements translate into tangible environmental gains.
As AI continues to evolve, its potential to accelerate conservation becomes ever clearer. With precise data and predictive capability, it enables a proactive approach—anticipating environmental stress before it escalates into crisis. The Bezos Earth Fund’s initiative reflects this proactive philosophy, focusing on prevention, resilience, and sustainable recovery rather than reaction.
In many ways, this marks a new era for philanthropy itself. Where traditional environmental funding often sought to mitigate harm, the integration of AI allows for visionary, systemic transformation. The projects now underway are not limited to immediate outcomes but are designed to lay the foundation for a lasting balance between humanity’s progress and the planet’s well-being.
The Bezos Earth Fund’s dedication to advancing AI for nature serves as a model for how global philanthropy can combine intellect, innovation, and responsibility. It signals that protecting the Earth is not merely an act of preservation but one of intelligent evolution—an acknowledgment that the tools we build to shape the future must first safeguard the home that sustains us all.
Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez have continually emphasized that meaningful change requires both urgency and optimism. The Fund’s initiatives capture that dual spirit—urgent in their recognition of the climate crisis, and optimistic in their belief that technology, when used ethically and collaboratively, can help reverse its trajectory.
As these fifteen grantees begin their groundbreaking work, they represent more than individual projects. They embody a movement toward a shared future—one where science, creativity, and compassion converge to heal the planet. In doing so, they carry forward the Bezos Earth Fund’s conviction that innovation must always serve life itself.

Honorees include Jean Shafiroff, recognized as Philanthropist of the Year for her extensive charitable work and influence across numerous causes; Robert Wiener, Chairman Emeritus of Maxx Properties, also named Philanthropist of the Year for his longstanding commitment to philanthropy; and Dr. Jeffrey Settleman, Senior Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer for Oncology Research and Development at Pfizer, who will receive the prestigious Breakthrough Science Award for his exceptional contributions to advancing cancer research.
Over nearly three decades, the Collaborating for a Cure fundraiser has become one of New York’s most inspiring philanthropic evenings. Known for blending elegance with purpose, the event draws a distinguished audience from the worlds of science, business, fashion, and entertainment. Guests will enjoy an exquisite seated dinner accompanied by a program that highlights the latest achievements of SWCRF-supported researchers, showcasing how collaboration continues to redefine what is possible in cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation stands as a model of sustained scientific partnership. Since its founding in 1976, the organization has awarded more than $120 million to over 200 researchers worldwide. Central to its success is the Foundation’s signature model, the Institute Without Walls, which fosters open collaboration among global investigators, encouraging them to share data, techniques, and discoveries in real time. This approach has dramatically accelerated the pace at which cancer research progresses, bridging disciplines and national boundaries in the pursuit of cures.
At the heart of the Foundation’s philosophy is the understanding that collaboration fuels discovery. Through the decades, SWCRF has consistently sought to fund innovative science that identifies and corrects abnormal gene functions responsible for cancer while minimizing treatment toxicity for patients. The organization’s impact extends far beyond traditional grantmaking, cultivating a global community of scientists united by the belief that cooperation is essential to eradicating cancer.
As the evening unfolds at Apella, attendees will be reminded of the enduring power of partnership — between scientists and philanthropists, between institutions and individuals, and between innovation and compassion. The setting, overlooking the East River, offers a fitting backdrop for a night that honors visionaries shaping the future of medicine.
The celebration’s timing also highlights an important evolution in the Foundation’s journey. With the formal introduction of the Samuel Waxman Institute for Aging & Cancer, the Foundation is ushering in a new era of scientific exploration. By bringing together researchers who specialize in both aging and oncology, this initiative seeks to understand how the biological processes of aging influence the development and progression of cancer. The insights generated through this work are expected to transform how scientists approach prevention strategies and therapeutic design for the years ahead.
The honorees each reflect the multidimensional spirit of the Foundation’s work. Jean Shafiroff, whose philanthropic reach spans healthcare, animal welfare, and education, continues to embody the intersection of generosity and advocacy. Robert Wiener’s influence as both a business leader and humanitarian reflects the vital role that private sector visionaries play in supporting life-changing research. Dr. Jeffrey Settleman’s leadership at Pfizer underscores how industry innovation and academic collaboration can work in concert to move science forward.
Each year, Collaborating for a Cure not only raises funds but also raises awareness of the profound impact that sustained scientific investment can achieve. The event’s atmosphere combines the refinement of a gala with the sense of urgency and optimism that accompanies groundbreaking research. Guests leave with a deeper understanding that progress in oncology is not measured solely in laboratory milestones but also in the lives extended and the families preserved through research-driven discovery.
The partnership between SWCRF and The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research serves as a model for modern philanthropy. By aligning missions and resources, these organizations demonstrate how cooperation between charitable and scientific entities can double the reach and impact of every contribution. Their shared vision ensures that funds raised in a single evening have the power to transform entire research portfolios and open new paths toward cancer cures.
Throughout the evening, attendees will have the opportunity to hear about recent advancements supported by SWCRF grants, each representing a step closer to transforming cancer from a life-threatening diagnosis into a manageable condition. From molecular insights into tumor resistance to precision therapies tailored to genetic profiles, the work funded by the Foundation exemplifies how sustained investment in science yields tangible hope.
As the 28th annual event approaches, anticipation builds among supporters who have witnessed the Foundation’s growth from a pioneering idea into a global force for scientific collaboration. The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation remains guided by its founder’s enduring belief that the cure for cancer will be discovered not by isolated efforts, but through collective determination and shared discovery.
For those wishing to join this celebration of progress and possibility, details and ticket information are available at www.waxmancancer.org/gala.
Dr. Samuel Waxman’s journey is defined by both scientific ambition and humanitarian vision. From his early days immersed in rigorous medical training to the founding of the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation and decades of global collaborations, his story is one of steady advancement toward the bold objective of eradicating cancer.
Born and raised in New York City, Samuel Waxman completed an undergraduate degree at Cornell University in 1957 and earned his M.D. at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in 1963. He then undertook residency and fellowship training at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where he would forge his career as an oncologist and hematologist.
In subsequent years he joined the faculty of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, rising to become the Zena and Michael A. Wiener Professor of Medicine (Cancer), Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine, Hematology and Medical Oncology, and Distinguished Service Professor of Oncological Sciences.
Even as the academic titles accumulated, Dr. Waxman’s attention stayed fixed on a key scientific frontier: the abnormal differentiation of cells that leads to leukemia and other cancers. He was among the first to champion “differentiation therapy” — a concept that instead of aiming merely to kill cancerous cells, seeks to restore them toward normal maturation.
In 1976, recognizing the critical need for flexible funding and cross‐institutional collaboration in cancer research, Dr. Waxman established the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF). The foundation was born out of a simple conversation with a donor who asked whether Dr. Waxman had ever thought of creating an organization to fund his work. From that moment, the foundation became his vehicle to marshal resources, build networks and drive research that crossed traditional institutional boundaries.
Under Dr. Waxman’s leadership the foundation adopted a philosophy he long held: science progresses fastest when investigators and laboratories with complementary strengths join forces. The SWCRF’s “Institute Without Walls” model embodies this by funding collaborations rather than isolated labs, enabling teams from North America, Europe and Asia to work in concert on cancer’s most intractable mysteries.
One of Dr. Waxman’s landmark achievements came in the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). Working with colleagues in China — notably at the Shanghai Institute of Hematology — he helped pioneer treatment regimens using all‐trans retinoic acid (ATRA) and arsenic trioxide. These therapies transformed APL from a near-certain fatal disease into one with survival rates above 90 percent.
Beyond leukemia, Dr. Waxman continued to apply differentiation‐based strategies, investigating how to correct abnormal gene functions, target regulatory proteins and even explore nutritional factors in cancer cell biology. His work linked vitamins such as A, B12 and folic acid to DNA synthesis and gene regulation, thus bridging basic biochemistry with clinical oncology.
Over the course of his career Dr. Waxman has authored more than 300 scientific papers, written chapters in textbooks on hematology and chemotherapy, and published books such as Differentiation Therapy and The Leukemia Cell. As founder and scientific director of SWCRF, he has overseen funding of tens of millions of dollars and fostered a global network of cancer researchers.
Equally important is Dr. Waxman’s role as mentor, connector and visionary. He has convened international conferences on differentiation therapy, set up honorary professorships (including at Shanghai Jiao Tong University) and guided young scientists into collaborative frameworks long before such models were common.
Dr. Waxman’s story is rooted in medicine yet shaped by global possibility. His early work in New York laboratories matured into partnerships that spanned oceans. His focus on differentiation therapy opened new pathways when cytotoxic chemotherapy seemed the only option. His foundation-building created infrastructure not only for his own laboratory but for research ecosystems that persist.
In recent years Dr. Waxman has held the titles of Professor Emeritus in Medicine, Hematology/Oncology and Oncological Sciences at Mount Sinai, while continuing active engagement in research and foundation work. His vision remains firmly on the future: therapies that are minimally toxic, personalized, gene‐function‐correcting, and globally accessible.
His legacy will persist well beyond his own lab: a generation of scientists seeing cancer not merely as a target to be destroyed but as a cellular programme to be re-educated; a network of collaborations crossing disciplinary and geographic borders; and therapies seeded from his foundational work that are now standard of care.
Dr. Samuel Waxman’s life is a testament to perseverance, innovation and the conviction that scientific progress is best achieved through cooperation rather than competition. His career exemplifies how a single patient‐centre orientation — that every cancer patient deserves the best possible future — can drive decades of inquiry, fund-raising, mentorship and global outreach.
In an era where the promise of cancer cure remains both urgent and complex, Dr. Waxman’s path reminds us that breakthroughs frequently come at the intersection of biology, collaboration and vision.

CDRS Marks 20 Years of Humanitarian Service with a Night of Music and Giving
A milestone celebration in New York unites compassion, culture, and community for Pakistan’s future.
For two decades, the Comprehensive Disaster Response Services, known globally by its acronym CDRS, has stood at the forefront of humanitarian work. Founded to bring medical and emergency relief to those affected by crises, the organization has evolved into a vital lifeline for communities in Pakistan and beyond. This year, CDRS reaches its twentieth anniversary, and to honor that achievement, supporters, artists, and philanthropists are gathering in New York for a fundraising dinner dedicated to the people of Pakistan and the victims of the 2025 flash floods.
The event, titled Celebration of CDRS 20 Years of Humanitarian Service in Times of Need, will take place on November 8 at Shirazi Café in Fresh Meadows, New York. The evening promises not only to commemorate years of tireless humanitarian service but also to renew the spirit of global unity that has always guided CDRS’s mission. Organized in collaboration with PACOLI NY, the occasion brings together an international audience of benefactors, artists, and advocates determined to make a tangible difference.
Guests will gather at 7 p.m. for an elegant dinner that leads into an evening of live performances by two of Pakistan’s most admired musical figures. Quratulain Baloch, one of the country’s most recognizable voices, will take the stage alongside Shallum Xavier, the celebrated guitarist and composer from the legendary band Fuzon. Their performances are set to create an atmosphere of reflection, pride, and shared purpose, transforming the event into both a celebration and a reaffirmation of faith in collective action.
The night represents more than a fundraiser. It is a tribute to two decades of dedication under the leadership of CDRS founder Todd Shea, whose vision has consistently focused on empowering local communities through healthcare, education, and disaster response. Over the years, the organization has worked in some of Pakistan’s most challenging terrains, bringing relief to those affected by earthquakes, floods, and medical crises. The twentieth anniversary symbolizes not just the passage of time but the continued trust of countless families who have been supported in their most difficult hours.
At the heart of this occasion is the recognition that humanitarian work thrives when it connects cultures. The collaboration with PACOLI NY underscores the importance of diaspora engagement, reminding attendees that compassion knows no borders. The Pakistani-American community, which has long supported CDRS, will play a prominent role in ensuring that funds raised from the dinner directly aid deserving citizens and ongoing recovery projects.
Shirazi Café, a venue known for its welcoming atmosphere, will serve as an elegant backdrop for an evening designed to balance gratitude with ambition. Guests will be invited to enjoy a full-course dinner while learning more about the organization’s current initiatives and the urgent needs facing flood-affected communities. The tables, priced from $700 to $1,000, and single tickets at $80, reflect a unified effort to transform generosity into concrete impact.
Behind the scenes, a committed organizing team has worked tirelessly to bring this event to life. Key figures include Bashir Qamar, Tauqeer Ul Haq, and Adam Azam, each of whom has been instrumental in coordinating the event’s outreach and logistics. With direct lines open for inquiries, their collaboration reflects the professionalism and precision that has long defined CDRS’s international operations.
As guests arrive, the atmosphere will be one of anticipation and reverence. Two decades of service cannot easily be encapsulated in a single night, but through the art of music and the spirit of philanthropy, the organization aims to inspire continued involvement from future generations. The melodies of Quratulain Baloch and the intricate guitar work of Shallum Xavier will offer a fitting tribute to resilience, echoing the rhythm of lives rebuilt through compassion.
The fundraiser highlights a simple yet profound truth: sustained humanitarian work depends not only on financial support but on the unwavering belief in shared humanity. Each attendee’s contribution becomes part of a much larger legacy that extends far beyond New York, reaching families in Pakistan’s flood-affected regions who depend on the organization’s continued intervention.
As the night progresses, stories of survival, recovery, and renewal will likely circulate among the guests, grounding the celebration in the reality of CDRS’s mission. For many, this evening will not only honor past achievements but ignite a renewed sense of purpose. In a world where crises continue to test endurance and empathy, CDRS’s twentieth anniversary stands as proof that consistent, organized, and compassionate work can change lives over generations.
For CDRS, the milestone is not an endpoint but a reminder of the journey ahead. With ongoing partnerships and community initiatives, the organization continues to set a standard for integrity and action in humanitarian response. The New York celebration, filled with music, gratitude, and vision, reaffirms a future built on solidarity and hope.

The 2025 Ribbon and Wellness Awards Gala at the New York Hilton will be remembered not only for its regal guest list and elegant setting but for a singular, unforgettable moment — the speech delivered by Marla Maples, a moment so heartfelt that it seemed, as His Highness Prince Mario-Max put it, to change the very molecules in the room.
#image_title
In a night illuminated by global royalty, philanthropy, and cultural distinction, Marla Maples’ words transcended ceremony. Her address became the emotional centerpiece of an evening devoted to wellness, compassion, and renewal. Speaking to an audience that included Her Majesty Queen Mother Tseyring Pem Wangchuck of Bhutan, Her Royal Highness Princess Ashi Chimi Yangzom Wangchuck, and His Highness Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe, Maples stood at the podium and offered what many later described as a living meditation — part reflection, part revelation, and entirely transformative.
Her message, anchored in love, gratitude, and the spiritual science of healing, echoed across the ballroom with rare authenticity. Rather than reading from notes or rehearsed lines, she spoke intuitively, allowing emotion and energy to guide her delivery. Those present recalled a moment when the space seemed to soften — a collective stillness as though the air itself was listening.
Her speech explored the connection between inner peace and outward wellness, touching upon how true healing begins in consciousness and extends outward into communities and the world. She emphasized that health and harmony are not separate from spirit, but expressions of it, reminding her listeners that kindness is the most powerful medicine available to humanity.
As she spoke, eyes filled with tears, and even the most seasoned diplomats and executives sat quietly, hands folded, absorbing her words as though they were both prayer and promise. The fusion of science, spirituality, and sincerity in her message reflected her lifelong interest in holistic wellness and conscious living. Her tone was calm but commanding — the voice of someone who has known transformation and chosen to use it as service.
This was not the glamour of a red carpet, but something higher — a moment of shared awakening at an event devoted to purpose. Guests later described feeling lighter, as if tension itself had lifted. In an evening already rich with royal presence and humanitarian recognition, Maples’ speech became its luminous heart.
Her reflections intertwined seamlessly with the spirit of the gala, whose focus on healing, resilience, and wellness has drawn visionaries and global figures from across disciplines. The evening’s host, healthcare innovator Maria, and co-host Andrise Bass, daughter of a distinguished ambassador, had curated a setting that blended luxury with meaning — the ideal stage for such a message to resonate.
Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe, who delivered an earlier keynote on global wellness diplomacy, praised the event as a landmark in cultural unity, acknowledging Maples’ address as a rare convergence of art and empathy. Her Majesty the Queen Mother and HRH Princess the Princess of Bhutan.

Her leadership—spanning City Hall, nonprofits, and advisory boards—has continually emphasized the importance of representation and collaboration in civic progress.
Also recognized was Brennan Gang, whose leadership at the Korean American Community Foundation has elevated immigrant voices and strengthened the national nonprofit network. Her work reflects the Foundation’s own belief in connection as the cornerstone of community power.
The Power of Collective Vision
At the heart of the evening stood Ana L. Oliveira, President and CEO of The New York Women’s Foundation. Her words carried the room with a sense of conviction and purpose: “Courage is as contagious as fear,” she reminded the audience, “and it is a choice which one we want to share.” Under her stewardship, the Foundation has continued to expand its impact, prioritizing community-based organizations that develop sustainable, self-determined solutions.
Co-Chairs Mary Baglivo and Danielle Moss Cox, along with Helene Banks, Michelle Henry, and Elba Montalvo of the Neighborhood Dinner Steering Committee, guided the evening with warmth and grace. Together, they honored not only the five award recipients but also the hundreds of women-led organizations that have shaped The Foundation’s story over nearly four decades.
Thirty-One Years of Transformative Giving
Since its founding in 1987, The New York Women’s Foundation has grown into one of the largest women-led grantmaking institutions in the world. To date, it has distributed more than $133 million to over 500 organizations—funding programs that address racial and gender equity, economic security, reproductive justice, and community safety. What sets the Foundation apart is its commitment to grassroots partnership: it listens first, funds locally, and amplifies the expertise of those directly shaping their communities.
The Neighborhood Dinner embodies this philosophy. Each honoree’s journey reflects the Foundation’s core belief that solutions should not be imposed from above, but cultivated from within the neighborhoods they serve. It is this approach that continues to make the Foundation’s impact both deep and enduring.
A Celebration Rooted in Brooklyn
Industry City, with its vast industrial beams and creative energy, provided an ideal setting for the 2025 dinner—a meeting ground of art, culture, and innovation. Guests mingled among installations from local artists, shared stories over dishes crafted by women-owned businesses, and celebrated the interconnectedness that defines Brooklyn’s spirit. The atmosphere was electric with possibility, the kind that lingers long after the last toast.
By night’s end, applause rang through the hall as the honorees stood together—five women from different worlds, united by their dedication to building a city where justice and opportunity are shared. Their achievements illuminated what the Foundation has long understood: when women lead, communities thrive.
As The New York Women’s Foundation continues its work across all five boroughs, the message of the evening remained clear—progress is not a solitary act but a shared movement, powered forward, together.
