MY FATHER PRINCE WALDEMARS TOUCHING ROYAL FAMILY STORY AND IT TELLS US A LESSON – Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe
Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe: Shortly after the second World War in 1945, my father His Highness Prince Waldemar Schaumburg-Lippe was sent from Germany as a little boy to Denmark, shocked as a five year old child born at Glienicke Palace Berlin from the bombed Germany, where the family had been on the run throughout the war. His mother, H.R.H. Princess Feodora of Denmark, thought it was best for Waldemar to be staying with her sister, Princess Caroline Mathilde and Hereditary Prince Knud of Denmark in Sorgenfri Castle for some time. Sorgenfri can be translated as free of worries castle.

He clearly remembers his first meeting with Denmark. Once at Sorgenfri Palace he was invited by both King Christian X, Frederik IX and Norway’s King Haakon and other family members. But little Prince Waldemar had imagined kings dress in full gear.
Then the Kings arrived, dressed in dark clothes, in suits. A bit boring, he thought, as the eyes of a five year old expected crowns on their heads with shiny gold and diamonds, says my dad Prince Waldemar, who never forgot his first Christmas in Denmark after the war: His Godmother Her Majesty Queen Alexandrine picked him up in her big state-car the dank Rolls Royce with her chauffeur, and they drove to Magasin du Nord. We went into the toy department, he says, and my aunt said: „Waldemar now you can choose anything you want. I had never seen anything so wonderful before. I chose a car that was my most cherished possession for many years. Afterwards we drove the Rolls Royce to the Amalienborg Royal Palace, where the entire staff was lined up with cocoa and Christmas cookies.“

Our ancestor King Christian X. of Denmark was truly one of a kind:
When the Nazi ordered Jews in occupied Denmark to identify themselves by wearing armbands with yellow stars, King Christian X of Denmark and non-Jewish Danes thwarted the order by donning the armbands themselves. So King Christian X. was sporting an armband as he makes his daily morning horseback ride through the streets of Copenhagen, explaining to citizens that he wears the Star of David as a demonstration of the principal that all Danes are equal. And non-Jewish Danes respond to their king’s example by wearing the armband as well, thus preventing the Nazi from identifying Jewish citizens and rendering the order ineffective.
