Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe: Louvre Couture: Fashion Finds Its Place in the World’s Most Famous Museum

For the first time in its storied history, the Louvre has opened its halls to fashion—not as a fleeting trend, but as a serious art form. The groundbreaking exhibition Louvre Couture: Art and Fashion—Statement Pieces brings together haute couture and centuries of decorative masterpieces in a bold dialogue between past and present.

Curated by Olivier Gabet, director of the Department of Decorative Arts, the show features over 100 ensembles and accessories from 45 iconic fashion houses, including Balenciaga, Chanel, Dior, and Iris van Herpen. These pieces stand beside tapestries, ceramics, and armory from the Louvre’s permanent collection, creating a visual conversation that stretches across centuries. In this setting, fashion is elevated beyond luxury—presented instead as cultural expression, craftsmanship, and innovation.

The staging unfolds in the Richelieu Wing’s Decorative Arts galleries, where more than 9,000 square meters of space are transformed into a landscape of fabric and form. Walking through the installation, visitors experience couture alongside medieval décor, Second Empire finery, and Baroque detail, all reframed through the lens of contemporary style. The result is a layered exhibition that reimagines the relationship between clothing and art

By welcoming couture into its hallowed halls, the Louvre signals an important cultural shift. Fashion, once dismissed as frivolous, is here honored as both history and artistry. This exhibition is more than a showcase of beautiful clothing—it is a recognition of fashion as part of humanity’s shared story, stitched into the very fabric of art itself.
