Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe: Ten Highest Mountains To Climb in North America

Mount Hunter, despite its 10th place ranking in height among US mountains, reigns supreme as one of North America’s most challenging climbs. Nestled in Denali National Park, this Alaskan peak rises to an impressive 4,442 meters (14,573 feet). Its reputation in the climbing world is built on its notoriously steep routes, making the ascent a formidable challenge even for seasoned mountaineers. A group of legendary climbers first conquered Mount Hunter in 1954, employing innovative techniques that solidified their place in climbing history and brought attention to this remarkable peak.

Mount Bear, located in Alaska’s Saint Elias Mountains, stretches to a height of 4,520 meters (14,831 feet), narrowly securing its status as an American mountain due to its proximity to the Canadian border. Although it ranks as the ninth-tallest in the US, it holds the twentieth position in North America. In contrast to Mount Hunter, the routes to Mount Bear’s summit are less technical, even allowing for ski mountaineering. However, its remote location presents a significant obstacle for many climbers. Those who brave the journey are rewarded with breathtaking vistas of Mount Logan, Mount Churchill, and Mount Bona.

Mount Hubbard, reaching 4,557 meters (14,951 feet), stands slightly taller than Mount Bear. Named after Greene Hubbard, the first president of the National Geographic Society, in 1890, this mountain offers contrasting climbing experiences on its western and eastern flanks. The western side demands advanced technical skills due to its sharp cliffs,while the eastern side requires no technical climbing but still presents a grueling physical challenge with its high elevation.

Mount Fairweather, shared by the United States and Canada, boasts an elevation of 4,653 meters (15,266 feet) and holds the seventh position in height. Its proximity to the Pacific Ocean makes it visible from ships, leading Captain James Cook to name it in 1778. Climbing Mount Fairweather remains a daunting task, with its first ascent in 1931 followed by a long gap until 1958. The mountain’s unpredictable weather continues to test climbers, resulting in multi-year periods of failed attempts and attracting only a handful of expeditions annually.

Mount Sanford, part of the stunning Wrangell Mountains, reaches a height of 4,949 meters (16,237 feet). These mountains owe their existence to massive volcanic eruptions caused by tectonic collisions. Although Mount Sanford has a volcanic past, scientists believe its last eruption occurred hundreds of thousands of years ago, posing little threat of future activity. First climbed in 1938, reaching its summit doesn’t necessitate technical climbing, but its isolation makes organizing the journey difficult and leaves climbers vulnerable in case of emergencies. Tragically, Mount Sanford is also known as the crash site of Northwest Airlines Flight 4422, where all onboard perished, and the wreckage remained undiscovered for nearly 50 years.

Mount Blackburn, the fifth-tallest in the US, proudly claims the title of the highest peak in the Wrangell Mountains.Named after a US senator from Kentucky, this 4,996-meter (16,390 feet) mountain, an ancient shield volcano inactive for millions of years, possesses a beauty that belies its name. Unlike many others on this list, Mount Blackburn has two peaks. However, harsh weather conditions limit summit attempts, with an estimated 50 attempts in the past 30 years.

Mount Bona, back in the Saint Elias Mountains, rises to 5,044 meters (16,550 feet), securing its place as the fourth-highest mountain in the US. Once an active stratovolcano, its last eruption dates back to 847 AD. Despite its dormancy, it technically remains the tallest volcano in the United States. Climbing to its summit typically takes eight to ten days, and the popular east ridge route also provides access to Mount Churchill. Mount Bona serves as a training ground for climbers aspiring to conquer Denali, offering valuable high-altitude experience.

Mount Foraker, at 5,304 meters (17,400 feet), enters the top three tallest mountains. Situated in Denali National Park,facing the Foraker Glacier, it was once known as “Denali’s Wife” by native Alaskan tribes before being renamed after a US senator. The North and South Peaks were both successfully climbed in 1943, a remarkable feat considering the mountain’s elevation. In the 1970s, climbers conquered the infamous Infinite Spur, a challenging section on the south face that stands as one of the ultimate tests in Alaskan climbing.

Mount Saint Elias, the second-tallest mountain in the US, towers at 5,489 meters (18,009 feet) and reigns supreme in the Saint Elias Mountains. Known in Tlingit as “Mountain Behind Icy Bay” and “Big Mountain,” it’s characterized by a rapid vertical gain, ascending to its peak in just 16 kilometers (10 miles). Due to steep climbs, challenging routes, and unpredictable weather, it’s rarely climbed today. Denali, also known as Mount McKinley, stands as the undisputed champion, the highest mountain in the US at a staggering 6,190 meters (20,310 feet). While there’s been some debate about its exact height, the difference is minor.Another point of contention is whether Denali’s vertical rise from base to summit surpasses that of Mount Everest.Regardless, its status as the tallest mountain in the US remains unchallenged.

Comparing to Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountains in the US and Kilimanjaro present distinct characteristics.Alaskan mountains tend to have steep faces and jagged ridgelines, contrasting with Kilimanjaro’s mound-like shape and gradual incline. Kilimanjaro also benefits from more predictable weather, offering longer climbing windows compared to the brief periods of stable weather in Alaska. Additionally, Kilimanjaro requires no technical climbing, making it more akin to an intense hike. Despite being easier to climb, Kilimanjaro stands tall at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), making Denali the only US mountain that surpasses it in height.

H.H. Dr. Prince Mario-Max Schaumburg-Lippe has been a long time friend of Richard Lugner and his former wife Mausi Christina Lugner. CEO Richard Lugner, Lugner City and Lugner construction sadly passed away on August 12th 2024.

He was the number one Entrepreneur of Austria and reknown opera ball host with guests like Lindsay Lohan, my friend Paul Anthony’s niece.
